A couple days ago, I watched the docudrama “Shooting Dogs” on the cable television channel, Showtime. It is a British film about a BBC reporter’s experience of being trapped in the African country, Rwanda, during the nineteen ninety four genocide of the Tutsis by the Hutu tribe.
Many people, …

Little Miss Sunshine is a road movie with a difference. A dysfunctional family from suburbia on their way to child’s talent contest seemed about as attractive to me as watching paint dry ! But I must say I was pleasantly surprised. A nice mix of humour and pathos and …

At first I really liked this movie, but now I absolutely hate it. I don’t even know why I keep the DVD around. This is a really old movie starring Prince and I guess it is about his life. I don’t know if it is a true story or …

I am completely and wholeheartedly in love with this film. And that’s because this movie is all about satire and parody. But what is even more enticing is the the subject matter. Politically incorrect in its delivery, this movie is really a tongue-in-cheek “guide” for …

Tropic Thunder is hilarious. There’s really no other way to put it. It’s vulgar and borderline offensive at points but if you can get through that you’ll have a blast watching this movie.
It opens with some “advertisements” of the products from the various characters. Our theater …

For those of you who are old enough you will remember the epic 11 hour series Brideshead Revisited which was without a doubt one of the best TV series ever to come out of England. If you go to the movie Brideshead Revisited expecting the same great script and …

I have seen in a film viewing a movie whose attempt is to fully make its viewer understand not only the life and works of Rizal, a Philippine National Hero, but also to people who watches the movie how difficult it was to make a movie out of a …

I made the decision to watch the movie “The Hunt” without knowing much about the plot. I didn’t even watch the trailer like I would do with most movies that I’m interested in, and I’m glad I didn’t because it was so much more interesting and thrilling that way. It’s …

If Alfred Hitchcock or Wes Craven had made the movie “Mary Poppins” the result would have been “Keeping Mum.” Maggie Smith star of dozens of movies plays Mum. She takes a job helping Gloria Goodfellow (played by Kristen Scott Thomas of “The English Patient” fame), the wife of the …

Fight Club is a brilliant movie; I found its portrayal of a psychologically disturbed human being very interesting.
The storyline in itself is quite good, but you’re never quite sure of where it is going until a major twist is revealed towards the end. But even with this lack of …

A lot can be said about the movie Live Free Or Die Hard. First of all, if you are a fan for action flick Bruce Willis, chances are you will enjoy this show. The other fact is if you are not a Bruce Willis fan, but a …

In this vampire comedy Mel Brooks tells his version of the story of Count Dracula. If you are familiar with the story, you will recognize some names: Mina, her fiancé Jonathan, Dr. Seward, crazy Renfield, and of course Abraham Van Helsing who is played by Mel Brooks himself. I …

This is a very interesting movie. I thought it would be like other movies that are based on true stories where it is all acted out and would maybe have some interviews with real people involved with the story in the special features, but that is not …

My wife has been wanting to see the movie Shutter Island for some time now. So, for our anniversary this past weekend, I decided to take her to the theater to see it.
It was OK but I’m not sure it was as good as she expected.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as …

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the “Scream” movies. I know that there are a lot of people who hate the franchise, but I never found myself in that camp. By that same token, I never bought it as a revolutionary leap forward in the …

I was digging through our movie cabinet a couple days ago (trying to find my daughter’s missing Nintendo DS) when I came across the movie Horror Express.
To be perfectly honest with you, I don’t even remember picking up this movie. I think my wife bought it for me from …

I found this “The Secret” to be quite ridiculous, a tad boring, and totally unrealistic. This “movie” generated much hype a couple of years ago and, like most, I fell for it all and ran out to rent it. BIG mistake. It spends two agonizing hours …

I rented the movie National Treasure today because it stars Nicolas Cage. I had seen the advertisements trailers for the movie during a mini TV show called treasure hunters. It is a movie about a man named Ben who is hunting for a treasure that was hid by the …

The interesting thing about the movie “The Jackal” is that you end up liking both Richard Gere and Bruce Willis. Even though Willis interprets an evil character in this movie, you can’t help liking him for his great acting skills. I must also say that Gere has been equally …

This remake of a Thai film is, simply put, bad. The acting is stodgy and stilted at best, while the stylistic approach seems to follow that set by The Ring years earlier. It seems like, since the success of that horror movie, numerous new imitations and remakes of asian …

Minstrel Man from 1944 really transports a person back to another generation when black face was the rage. It’s hard to believe that era existed, but it did, and many found it to be highly entertaining.
The movie stars Benny Fields as an entertainer named Dixie Boy Johnson. …

I am reviewing the movie, Grace is Gone, starring John Crusack. So there’s this ordinary, down to earth guy. He works at a store. His wife is a soldier who got called away to Iraq. They have two little girls. The guy is forced to raise his two …

Just one year after Oklahoma, Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae reunited in Carousel, which is another classic movie musical. The chemistry was still there, though the ending is very different, in part by the nature of the story itself.
My favorite part of the movie, though, is the ending …

The History Boys is about some cute looking boys in a school, who has some strict regime and school lesson periods. They are all a dish to watch out for, and I can’t memorize their names, as the whole time I was watching this movie, I was just …

It’s hard to say who was more excited about this movie when the news first hit the floor. All the sugar charged ten-year-old boys who really just wanted to see some big robots blow stuff up, or the generations of baby boomers who remember it from when they …

There are quite a few movies out there that got their start as Saturday Night Live skits. One of those, Coneheads, is actually not that bad of a movie.
The movie focuses on the Conehead family, a family of aliens who are trying to pretend to be a normal suburban …

I was expecting big things when I rented The Hangover on DVD; I expected, given the trailers and my friends’ views, that I would be laughing uproariously the entire time. However, although there were some funny and witty moments, I was disappointed. It had good moments, when I did …

I don’t normally watch movies by Tyler Perry. I find the subject matter to be kind of trite. Additionally, it often seems like the sets are too artificial looking. The best of the best are always the stars of these films in terms of …

I didn’t watch the Butterfly Effect when it first came out. It looked somewhat interesting, however the fact that it starred Kelso from That 70’s Show sort of turned me off. I mean, it is Kelso we are talking about, who wants to watch him in a …

When I saw the previews for Final Destination 3, I remember thinking the producers were overkilling on an otherwise great franchise. When I watched the movie on DVD, I found I was right.
The plot of the movie seemed a bit forced and was confusing from the start. Beginning with …

Sequels usually flop, unable to capture the magic of the original. Rare cases include Superman II and The Empire Strikes Back. Back to the Future Part 2 joins that rare class, mainly because it is told partly from within the first movie. The filmmakers incorporated scenes from the first …

The historical epic genre has been lost for the world of cinema ever since Ben Hur and its 11 Academy Awards until Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. What Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe did in the end of the second millennium led to 12 Academy Award nominations, too …

Bloodrayne is one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long time and considering how many movies I watch a year, that’s saying a lot. The only reason I watched the movie is because it had Billy Zane in it and I’ve been a fan of his since …

The idea of watching a psychological film circling around different personalities inside a single person is potentially invigorating. After all the idea has never been done to death. That’s why I am earnestly hopeful that my first M. Night Shyamalan feature could fulfill the gap of films I missed in …
