It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the “Scream” movies. I know that there are a lot of people who hate the franchise, but I never found myself in that camp. By that same token, I never bought it as a revolutionary leap forward in the horror/slasher genre either.

The first movie was good for what it was, the second was bad, I thought the third one was a step up, though I seem to be in the minority on that one. So, going into this, I didn’t have heightened expectations, but I wasn’t expecting a total disaster either.

Sadly, this movie is a dud. The formula has gotten tiresome and this doesn’t bring anything new

      to the table.

The movie doesn’t even really have a plot. It’s the anniversary of the original murders and “ghostface” re-emerges to once again terrorize Sydney.

The fact that over a half dozen psychopaths decided to run the same gimmick really stretches credulity. They try to hang lampshades on it with meta references, but it just makes the movie feel that much faker. You never establish any connection to any of the characters. It comes off as hollow.

Even the returning characters aren’t given a whole lot to do or work with. Sydney herself almost becomes a background character and while the relationship with Gail and Dewey is touched upon here and there, they aren’t given a clear arc either.

The movie isn’t all that scary either. There are a lot of jump scares and the only tension that’s built up is you, the viewer, trying to brace yourself for inevitable “boo!” moment.

I also found all of the celebrity appearances rather distracting. It almost hits “Sharknado 2″ levels where one-off characters are played by notable actors and actresses. If they were given something substantial to do, it would have helped, but they just sort of pop in and are done a little later.

There were a couple of decent jabs at other recent horror trends such as “torture porn” which worked, but those were just small parts.

The movie also has an unjustifiable run time ...

of 2 hours. You feel it too as there isn’t enough to warrant taking this long for things to happen. If they had cut out 20 minutes, I think it would have helped immensely.

You could argue that they were pushing it by making this franchise into a trilogy, but I felt like that was a good stopping point. 3 is a nice round number and it seems to work best for franchises. This was just unnecessary.

Like “Paranormal Activity”, whatever merits the franchise had were worn away by constant retread after retread. It’s what happens when you don’t know when to stop milking the cash cow.

If they do make a fifth (and I really don’t

think that they should), I think that they need to start going into the goofy territory.

There’s a joke about how the fifth “Stab” movie involved time travel and I think it’s that sort of thing that will invigorate the franchise. Make “Scream in Space” or “Ghostface in the Hood”. The Friday the 13th movies didn’t really start getting good until they got goofy and that may very well prove to be the case here.

As far as this movie goes, I do not recommend it. It was a waste of time and you’d be better off spending your time watching something else. There are tons of movies that are better than this so don’t even bother.

This movie was so predictable. It wasn’t even scary at all. The actors sucked. It really annoyed me. Scream movies have been milked to death. Enough already Such limited imaginations. How about something original. Boring Wasn’t enough excitement for me. I barely blinked. There was nothing to make me hold on to the edge of my seat. Or to hide my face because I actually felt like someone was coming through my own door or something. I wanna feel like my heart is gonna come out of my chest. I wanna hold on to my man cause I’m actually scared. I wanna be so engaged that I will hold myself from a bathroom break so I don’t miss anything. I don’t think I’ve ever been so bored. If I had actually paid money to see this crap. I would have demanded my money back for such a waste of my time and energy.

The movie was indeed dragging and I always wonder, why would they always inject nudity or sex in a horror film, then I would remember, they have to sell the movie and for sure, it is the driving factor - not the story nor the plot or the horror scenes but what the characters are doing before they are caught in a horrific supposed to be scary scene.

I wished the movie Scream 4 had a fresh perspective. I always liked mystery / horror / crime movies, but this one was predictable. Same town, same Sydney, same kind of murders. I personally thought it was just getting a little too repetitive. I thought they were boring audience in instalments with the sequels, especially 3 and 4. :-(
