This remake of a Thai film is, simply put, bad. The acting is stodgy and stilted at best, while the stylistic approach seems to follow that set by The Ring years earlier.

It seems like, since the success of that horror movie, numerous new imitations and remakes of asian horror movies have sprung forth, attempting to capitalize on it’s well

      deserved success.

Shutter is one of those movies.

The plot follows the newly wed couple of Ben and Jane, as they attempt to discover the mystery of spectral images embedded in photographs taken by Ben.

Of course, being a “horror” movie (and I’m really stretching the term here) things aren’t really as they seem, and, surprisingly, things aren;t what they seem at first! Shocker.

The twist ending is more disturbing than terrifying, and not in a supernatural way at all.

It all leads up to an abrupt, crashing ending that leaves the viewer unsatisfied and, at least in my case, incredibly irritated that I just wasted two hours of my life on this inferior remake.

      Just like the Ring,

Shutter bears an Asian location, in this case, Japan.

The culture isn’t that evident at all, in fact, it feels like a bastardized American interpretation of what Japan is supposed to be like.

As far as actual scares go, the meat of any horror movie, you will almost definitely want to look elsewhere.

Although one or two scenes exist that

will cause a temporary startle, there are absolutely no elements of this movie that terrify in the slightest.

Shutter is just another remake of a superior movie, executed in a fashion to lose all the impact of the original.

Maybe studios should just stop financing these types of movies.

Does anyone really even care about them anymore? Because I know I don’t.
