Mountain State Forest Festival has been a West Virginia tradition since 1930. The festival has many components, such as the Queen’s Ball, Coronation, Firemen’s Parade, Grand Feature Parade, carnival, ect. The festival is a celebration of the state’s natural beauty and features the natural colors of the season (the festival is held in early October of every year.)

I’ve gone every year since I can remember. It’s a great place to take your family during the day. There

are activities for every age group spread across downtown Elkins: arts and crafts shows and displays at the Davis and Elkins college campus, food and booths at the city park (the local animal shelter has a wonderful adoption booth,) rides and games throughout the city walk, historical displays in shopfronts, etc.

The carnival is open during the night, as well, and many bands play for the late-night crowd (it’s a little less kid-friendly after dark, so parents ...

      • take note.) Personally, if you’re going with your children, go earlier in the day. Park vendors are typically handing out free souvenirs and rides for little ones. For adults who aren’t really interested in the night life, morning or early evening is best. It’s usually either blazing hot or pouring the rain (as is the traditional weather) and just in case you miss the rain, it’s best not to be out at noon.

        The food vendors are amazing.

There are more chain-based vendors (Pizza Hut and the like) and of course, the traditional “corn dog and lemonade” carts you see at every carnival, and then there are the fun food vendors: pit bbq, steak sandwiches, and my personal favorite, the dessert truck with any tasty nibblet a kid could want.

Elkins is a great place to visit if you’re in the area around October. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, especially if you enjoy fall foliage.
