The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.: The Orb Scholar begins with a recap of the Orb, first seen in the pilot episode of this series. Humorously, the magical orb is labeled as a UFO - unearthed foreign object. When last seen, the orb was floating down the rapids of a river. In the course of this hour, the orb reappears and we get a big hint of its power.

      This series is in

the vein of westerns of yesteryear. Not only does Bruce Campbell appear in the opening theme, but so does his wonder horse, Comet. I love that. It’s a wonderful relationship between these two. Like Champion and Trigger before him, Comet helps to save the day.

The goal of this unique western/comedy/sci-fi show is for Brisco to track down outlaw John Bly and find the mysterious orb.

I do have to say that while ...

      • Campbell is perfect for this off-kilter character, he did overact in telling the story Donovan Joe, which is the setup for this episode. His delivery was too forced. It just wasn’t natural.

Robert Picardo guest stars as a deputy. He snarls and sounds real mean. I laughed. I’ve just seen him for too long as a doctor and physical education teacher to take the snarl seriously.

Also, I’m just tired already of

Julius Carry’s loud Lord Bowler. Now the character is the average adversary who actually develops a rapport with his nemesis, but he just shouts too much for me. He provides color in a humorous vein, but he needs to stop shouting so much. That said, in this episode he and Brisco bond a little and that part of the story is actually very, very good. Carry sings Amazing Grace, and it’s quite emotional.
