It was 75 laps as always for the annual Bud Shootout that commences the racing action for those in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series. Carl Edwards was on the pole, a result of a good draw in the Shootout Pole show. It’s not a technical accomplishment, but a simple luck of the draw that put him there. This is a night race and for me, that’s the tops. I love racing under the lights.

      Right at the

mandated 25 lap mark when the cars were scheduled for their 10-minute pit stop, Michael Waltrip’s 51-car snapped around and brought out the caution. Other than that, the racing was clean and moderately watchable. Edwards led the entire segment. My fun came in watching my favorite, Jeff Gordon, come from the 23rd spot all the way to 10th. It was racy during this segment, but really not all that exciting.

The second segment of the race ...

      • was a 50-lap sprint to the finish line and it had some nice racing in it. The thing about drafting is that you just can’t go crazy with concern until the end. A driver can be 25th on one lap and the leader the next. That’s how it works. It does create fun to see the back and forth; it also causes heartburn and ulcers.

There were a couple of events but the big one came as

the cars headed for the finish during a green-white checkered. Jeff Gordon got into Greg Biffle, turning him and causing a ton of cars to pile up. I couldn’t tell, but the announcers said they thought Matt Kenseth had hit Gordon, shoving his car into Biffle’s. Regardless, it ended the race, gave Kevin Harvick the end, and left Gordon with a sixth place result.

I liked the race. It was exciting and a good start to the 2010 season.
