I can unreservedly say that this is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. John Fowles novel is a dark and mystical inquiry into the human psyche, told through a page turning series of events on a small Greek island.

The novel opens with the main character Nicholas Urfe, having some relationship problems in England.

Accepting an offer of a teaching

job on an island in Greece, he jumps at the chance to escape.

On the island, Nicholas wanders in a depression for much of the time, before coming into contact with an enigmatic island recluse, Maurice Conchis.

Urfe visits Conchis’ villa and strange happenings begin to occur.

The novel then spirals into a theatre of the bizzare, each further twist and revalation to the ...

      • plot leaving the reader questioning and thirsting for more.

Language is employed beautifully and a delicately appropriate balance between poetics and ostensity is brilliantly executed.

The novel poses many questions about perception and prejudice and the arrogance of reason, and touches subtley and impressively on the subject of ethics.

While I was reading this novel, I wondered whether it would maintain it’s momentum, given

that it is a relatively large book, but truely it doesn’t disappoint.

I also finished the novel feeling somewhat confused, but upon further reflection cannot say I would have wanted it to end any other way.

It would be unjust of me to reveal the final twist in the tale, but this is a novel that remains lingering in the mind long after reading.
