I saw Raising Waylon for the first time recently and was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. I say that because I’m not really a fan of the movie’s stars, Tom Gibson and Poppy Montgomery, and because it’s pretty predictable from start to finish. There’s not much innovation here, although the catalyst for

what happens is maybe not quite so common.

Apparently, a couple names two of their friends as godparents for their newborn. The friends dated one time, but hate each other. As the years pass, they really have little to do with each other and their relationship to the child is minor. He’s the noncommittal type and she’s busy with a career. That’s all pretty standard quo. This is where the formula comes in.

You can probably guess the rest of the movie. Take two seconds and give it a shot. Yes, the parents die and they want the godparents to raise their son. The two reluctantly try to make it work.

Slowly, they actually grow to love the child, who’s school age now, and each other. There’s no surprise here. The only reason it passes is because Gibson and Montgomery are good actors.

There’s all the usual angst at the end when they risk losing the child, but you know going in that they aren’t going to lose the

kid. Doris Roberts has a great scene here. She’s the boy’s aunt.

After watching Gibson do nothing but frown for seasons on Criminal Minds, I probably enjoyed this more for seeing him laugh for a minute. He never does that on his current show.

So, Raising Waylon might entertain one time, but if you’re looking for something fresh, this isn’t it.
