The New Year Eve’s Murder (by Lee Harris, published by Ballantine Books, 1997)

This is my first Lee Harris book, and it was a real surprise. Lee Harris was a pseudonym for a romance writer, and I thought that this could be one of those simple-to-solve mysteries to while away the time. It was however

      beyond my expectations.

Christine Bennet, a former nun, had her very first baby. She was now an amateur investigator, with a number of successful cases. This time, Christine with her husband and new baby were spending the New Year’s Eve at a friend’s house where they encountered the case of a missing ...

      • girl. In the course of her investigation, Christine found a corpse and discovered buried secrets of illegitimacy, extortion and murder.

The case of a missing person turned out to be more than just a murder – I had been kept on edge, reading on for the links and conclusion. There were plots within plots – at

times it seemed a bit far-fetched, but then what is fiction without imagination? The author had a protagonist who seemed to possess conflicting behavior. Usually polite and pleasant, Christine’s style of handling witnesses, however, was direct and bordered on interrogation rather than skillful probing. Overall, the book had been short, simple and enthralling.
