I’ve had my Acer Travelmate 8100 for several years, and many of the people I used to work with also had different versions of it. I’ve tried quite a few of them, and I have like all of them. My main reason for liking the one I have now is that nothing has been wrong with it. I’ve had some problems with the network card not being fast enough to download very long videos on YouTube, but that is the only real problem so far. The result was a blue screen and a lot of noise, and I had to turn it off manually to stop it so I don’t plan to try it again, but turning off a few of the other internet browser windows I had opened at

the same time solved the problem. Other than that I have had no problems with the computer. I have of course had my share of software trouble, but nothing that I have had to blame on the hardware.

The PC has a screen that has the right format for most modern films. It is also more than good enough for normal films, but I don’t watch films like Lord of the Rings and Avatar on it. It’s fine for web-TV and your friend’s videos though, although the loudspeakers don’t have enough of volume. If you want to have an external device, like a second screen or a projector, you have to use the special Acer settings to set them up. It is not the same as on other laptops, so

don’t throw away your manual! As the screen is dimensioned for showing wide-screen films, you will have to change the settings for most projectors. There is a special Acer ePowerManagement that let you chose things like CPU speed, LCD brightness and how long it should wait before turning the screen saver on, going into hibernation etc. Once you have found it, it is very easy to use. As my main complaint against the laptop is battery life, it is also a very useful panel to know. The batteries are supposed to last for several hours but if you have everything on full speed, they might last for one. If you run several things at once, they might last even shorter. The only time I’ve had a problem with this is ...

when I want to use the laptop when flying. I’ve been restricted to doing only writing and not much more, as that would drain the batteries before the journey was over.

However, as the laptop is quite heavy I’ve got a much smaller one for travelling and use the Travelmate more like a stationary computer. It has a very comfortable keyboard and mouse pad, so I don’t feel I need a stationary PC. It is a bit slow when I try to run several memory demanding programs at the same time, like for example matlab and comsol multiphysics, or maybe photoshop elements and several internet browser windows at the same time. For normal multitasking it works perfectly though. The version I have is not suitable for playing games with advanced

3D graphics, but works quite perfectly for games that aren’t too memory demanding.

The one thing I’d like to change with the layout would be to move the shift that opens the CD a bit further away from the power outlet, as I always open the CD-ROM every time I turn it off and take out the power cable. Not a problem, but very annoying. I would also have liked a proper card reader, but they have installed that on newer computers so my next PC will probably have one. As I’m very happy with the one I have, it will probably be an Acer Travelmate too. I’ve actually spilt paint on it without it getting ruined, and once I got cookie crumbs in the keyboard without noticing, so it is a quite sturdy computer.

Click on the speaker icon in the bottom, right corner of the screen, and this will allow you to adjust the volume.
