London city airport is the only London airport that is actually located in London. It is the UK’s leading business airport, and has connections to most major European airports. It is smaller than the other London airports, but an additional runway is planned before 2030.

Getting to and from is very easy. The London City Airport Docklands Light Railway connects East London to the London Underground, and the DLR station is connected to airport terminal. You don’t have to go out of the building to get to the train, so the only thing that can be a bit problematic is figuring out which train you can take. They go quite often, about one every 10 minutes, so missing one is no reason to worry. I think it is very convenient to arrive straight at the Bank underground station and travel on with the same ticket. It takes about 20 minutes to get to Bank, long enough to read a

new paper but not long enough to get bored. There is also buses, normal trains and a shuttle express that you can order in advance that picks up passengers at the main areas connected to City.

Compared to other London airports, the London city airport is mostly used by business men and women. You should arrive at least 45 minutes before, not 2 hours like on for example Heathrow. The security check is really efficient, as most people there are used to travelling they know what to bring and what not to bring. I loved being able to just walk through without having to wait for someone who had to quarrel about water bottles and medicines. I also like the short check-in times, it enables you to make the most of your stay and don’t spend several hours waiting on an airport. The only one piece of hand luggage rule is lifted, so you can bring more than one ...

      • bag as hand luggage. However, check the list for what you can’t bring on the plane, it is getting quite long.

As the airport is designed for business travellers, it is never a problem to find a power outlet for your laptop and free internet connection. I didn’t spend much time waiting there, but the time I spent was actually used for something sensible as I logged on and did some work that I otherwise would have had to do when I got back home. As the airport wants people to go through as fast as possible, they recommend checking-in online before you come. However, as most people do that, the times I’ve chosen to check in at the airport there has hardly been any queues. The self-service check-in machines are for passengers with hand baggage only, so I always went to the check-in counter but still had no problems with getting through to the gate in 45 minutes.

With only 14 gates it is easy to find get around and find out where you are going. As they want you to get away from the airport as fast as possible too, I’ve never had to wait more than 4-5 minutes for the luggage.

As I’ve never had a lot of time there, I haven’t eaten much or done a lot of shopping. But there’s is a Café Nero and it has exactly the same as the ones in London, so getting a cup of something and a nice snack was no problem.

The only problem with the London City Airport is that none of the cheap airlines fly there, so you probably have to pay more to get to London if you want to fly there instead of Stansted, Gatwick or Luton. But if you want to save time both when travelling to and from London and in check-in and security, the London City Airport is great.
