Voodoo River (by Robert Crais, published by Hyperion, 1995)

This is the first Robert Crais book I have read; it is quite a lot to take in with plenty of implausible goings-on and colorful characters that could only be possible in fiction.

A famed TV star had engaged private investigator, Elvis Cole, to look into her background.

Knowing that she was an adopted child, she wanted to know about her biological parents and medical history. It seemed a straightforward case, however as Cole investigated further, he found that it was not just a tale of adopted parents and children. He brought in his partner, Joe Pike, and they found buried secrets ...

      • and conspiracies which involved racism, drugs and immigrant smuggling, blackmail and murder.

The story has a good storyline with clever twists and turns. The author has woven in fantastic plots within plots – it is like opening one box to find another one inside. My only grouse is about the protagonist – Elvis

Cole talked too much and had too high an opinion of himself. His partner, Joe Pike, was on the other end of the spectrum – he spoke only when he felt like doing so. Overall, the book is an engaging read – it has a good portion of mystery and investigative ingredients mixed with creative imagination.
