The best part about living in Michigan would have to be being surrounded by the Great Lakes. Most people think of Michigan as a cold state that has blizzards and snow all the time. Wel, in the winter yes, it can get like that. But we actually have very nice summers and sometimes the temperature gets way up there.

So, when the thermometer hits 90 and it’s uncomfortably humid outside, people around here flock to the beach. It’s always about 10 degrees cooler near Lake Michigan, and there is always a refreshing breeze to cool you off. Not to mention that Lake Michigan is greta for swimming.

People who are looking to spend the weekend, or even longer, have the option of camping at a park

on the beach. One of our favorites is Holland State Park. It’s about 20 minutes from where we live, so it’s not a long drive at all.

The park itself is nothing fancy. It’s much different that many other campgrounds we stay at. Most campgrounds have grassy areas, or are wooded, or have nice landscaping, clubhouses, kids activites and more. At Holland State park, you basically get a parking space on the beach.

Each campsite is on cement with some beach sand behind it. You basically get a parking spot with a picnic table. Don’t expect to see grass or flowers or anything like that. The sites aren’t exactly spacious either. You can expect to be very close to whomever is camping ...

      • next to you. One more thing missing…a fire pit. There are no fires allowed at this campground. For us that’s okay because we would rather watch the sunset on the beach, or stroll down the boardwalk and watch the boats come in.

The big appeal of this campground is that you are basically right on the beach. The beach itself is a great place, clean, with nice bathrooms, a pavillion where they sell ice cream and other items. Another great feature about Holland beach is that they have a walkway all the way down the beach, like a sidewalk so that you don’t hav eto treck through beach sand all the way down to the water. This comes in handy, especially when you

are lugging around coolers and beach chairs.

One of the rules of Holland State Park is that there is no alcohol allowed on the beach or anywhere within that campground. This rule is strictly enforced, so if you like to enjoy a beer or glass of wine, you will have to do it elsewhere.

If you prefer more traditional campgrounds with woods, grass, firepits, etc. There are plenty of other campgrounds right down the road from the state park. The only problem is that then it’s a longer walk to the beach, or you may have to pack up your stuff an ddrive in…and pay for parking.

We like staying at Holland State Park, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to camp right on the beach.
