  • Making the best sculpture out of playdough
  • Er no, it's definitely Red, House of Commons is green
  • It's quite a cosy pub - with lots of large leather sofas, tables and chairs about, and a bit of a hunting lodge theme with antler-chandeliers and stuffed animals on the walls (not my cup of tea, but still quite impressive) I'd thoroughly recommend a visit to this pub on quiz night

I went to this pub for the first time specifically for the quiz. I’d read a few reviews which made it sound good fun - a little different from the average quiz, less serious, in fact downright silly. It lived up to expectations! The quiz master was thoroughly entertaining. There were challenges between every question round. 1.

Flying a toy plane furthest. 2. Blowing the biggest bubble. 3.

Making the best sculpture out of playdough. 4. Blind darts. Yes you read that right.

They were all good fun, got the whole pub involved, cheering, heckling, generally laughing at the earnest yet ultimately doomed attempts of each team to win the task. The quiz master tended to give the prize based on the team which

was not quite so awful as the others. The question rounds themselves could perhaps have done with more variation. The first round was in the news, but was almost entirely entertainment focused - lots of reality TV and so-called celebrity based teasers.

The second, third and fourth rounds were a little more varied, with one focusing almost entirely on geography. But still a strong entertainment bias. A few ‘answers’ were not terribly well researched, but the pub had been well primed and the ‘quiz master is always right’ so we didn’t bother to challenge anything. For example, the colour of the seats in House of Lords was asserted as Green.

Er no, it’s definitely Red, House of Commons is green. Small rant over. There ...

      • was an amusingly rude sudden death type question when our team tied with another. The winning team gets vouchers for a free meal in the pub.

There is also an additional question after the quiz, with a money jackpot of £100, which rolls over every week until won. The question was “How many times is the word “sing” appear in the Travis song ‘Sing’?” There was a 30 second time limit, so strictly no listening to it to cheat and count, you had to make a fair guess … but unless there is an exact answer, the money put is not won. So the pub really makes an effort to have fun with this quiz, and be a bit different to the normm. The

bar staff were very efficient and friendly.

The drinks were not badly priced, and there was a decent choice for things like Wine and Spirits and cocktails, although I did note there were not many beers/bitters/lagers on tap. The food menu was a little limited, but pretty good value and very nice. My friends had a HUGE pie - it was like a viking boat on a sea of mash. The burgers were also really big and very well cooked.

It’s quite a cosy pub - with lots of large leather sofas, tables and chairs about, and a bit of a hunting lodge theme with antler-chandeliers and stuffed animals on the walls (not my cup of tea, but still quite impressive) I’d thoroughly recommend a visit to this pub on quiz night.
