  • At first sight I was put off because I assumed it was probably just another boring action film, the kind that leave me a bit cold, but actually this film is based on a very interesting true story and although it was long, I enjoyed every minute
  • When I found out it is a Ridley Scott film I had higher hopes for it as Bladerunner and Alien are two of my favourite films
  • The film is entirely cliche free and the ending is really satisfying and quite amazing that it is true

I loved this film. At first sight I was put off because I assumed it was probably just another boring action film, the kind that leave me a bit cold, but actually this film is based on a very interesting true story and although it was long, I enjoyed every minute. When I found out it is a Ridley Scott film I had higher hopes for it as Bladerunner and Alien are two of my favourite films. Set in Harlem, New York, Denzel Washington plays Frank Lucas who, during the Vietnam War, started importing pure heroin straight from Vietnam. As he was cutting out the middle man

and getting it direct, he could afford to sell it cheaply on the streets, so the junkies were getting their hands on better stuff at a cheaper price. This gave him the edge and soon he was the biggest dealer in Harlem. As he had picked up the ‘no messing about’ sheer brutality of his mentor, Bumpy Johnson (played by Clarence Williams III), he even managed to get the respect of the local mafia who ended up protecting him. He had the whole of Harlem in the palm of his hand - he looked after them and they looked after him.

He also had the protection of the police ...

      • and this is really the story of how Lucas ended up exposing the utter corruption of the New York police drugs agency. Russell Crowe plays Richie Roberts, a cop who refuses to take the pay-offs that most of the other cops were taking, a way of thinking that gets him exiled by his fellow officers. How was Lucas getting the drugs from Vietnam into the country? By paying off the American military and bringing it over on US planes. When Roberts finally pins down Lucas, his moral crusade against corruption finally comes to fruition, not so much because Lucas has now been caught, but for what Lucas
revealed about the authorities. As this is a true story, I was amazed to find out at the end of the film that three quarters of the New York police drugs agency were found to have taken bribes.

The film is entirely cliche free and the ending is really satisfying and quite amazing that it is true. I had never seen Crowe in a film before and he plays this part with subtle intensity. Denzel is great as Lucas. The violence is sudden and horrific but this is not a typical action film, the story it tells is a lot more than that. An excellent film I would recommend.
