An action-filled romp, this prequel to “The Mummy 2” tells the tale of an ancient time when the evil King Memnon is sending his troops across vast lands to conquer all neighboring armies and peoples. King Memnon is not only securing his victories through the prowess of his military skill but with the help of the unwilling captured sorceress Cassandra’s magical powers.

      In order to prevent the

butchery of their people, the leaders of the remaining free tribes decide to hire the skill of the assassin Mathayus, one of the last of the great Akkadian people.

He is ordered to assassinate the king but fails in the process.

Instead, he captures the king’s greatest asset, his sorceress, with the help of a horse thief, a scientist, and a street boy.

While taking her across the desert, the two become involved, and the situation gets more complicated.

When they arrive at the last safe haven for the free tribes, Cassandra sees a vision of great destruction should she remain with Mathayus and decides to return to Memnon, despite the danger she will be in.

Mathayas decides to save her, so he and the last of the free tribes ready themselves for ...

a final show down with King Memnon, while Mathayus prepares himself to fulfill his destiny as the great Scorpion King.

Dwayne Johnson plays the strong male lead and certainly charms as the protagonist.

He plays the action sequences and comedic timing to his advantage.

While the dialogue leaves something to be desired, the cast do a great job with the action filled plot.

      The story is straightforward

and mostly concerned with the somewhat mediocre action sequences, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.

It does not touch upon the story of “The Mummy” at all, and only provides the back story to “The Mummy 2’s” secondary character of the Scorpion King.

Although the sorceress foreshadows the unfortunate fate the Scorpion King will fall under once his kingdom falls, the story finalizes with a happy yet predictable ending.
