I can’t remember the last time I sat through a silent movie. Aside from the Mel Brooks’ flick, Silent Movie, which actually had one spoken word in it, I believe it was back in the 70’s when I sat through an authentic silent film. Well, I caught one by accident on TCM last week — Sherlock Holmes. I believe this was actually the very first movie to

      feature the character.

John Barrymore starred as Holmes with Roland Young as Dr. Watson. This version was based on a play by Wiliam Gillette. It was directed by Albert Parker. It’s just fascinating to think about this version of the Holmes’ movies because this one stands on its own. It tells the beginning of Holmes, as a college student. We see him meeting his arch nemesis,

      • Professor Moriarty, and how that meeting propels him to find his passion in detecting. Before that, Holmes stated he was a student of life.

The beginning of the crisis occurs when athletic funds at Cambridge are stolen and Prince Alexis accused. It introduces this character, plus two other women. I really don’t even want to give it away in case a reader decides to check this out.

I was absolutely surprised by the ending, in a good way. It was fun and for me, a first.

Of course, when you watch a silent movie, you can’t multi-task. If you do, you’ve missed the story. That’s why these are hard for me to watch, but I made it through this one. Do something different and the next time this airs, give it a shot.
