Shape of the Moon is a documentary released in 2004. It has no narration, but is basically a cameraman who follows around an Indonesian family. It received rave reviews from Roger Ebert and other critics.

It is shot entirely in Indonesia, and the language is Indonesian with subtitles. Despite the fact that so many critics gave Shape of the Moon a positive review, and that

it won a number of rewards, I really didn’t like it at all.

For one thing, the camera angles were funny. There were many shots included that I think were intended to be “symbolic.

” In some cases, this worked well, such as when diseased cats were shot to show the decay of the city and lizards devouring crickets are shown during a conversation about money ...

      • lending. At other times, however, this was distracting and heavy handed.

The camera work was sloppy, the editing of the movie left much to be desired. Also, I question how the makers of the movie decided which scenes would be shown.

They must have shot hours of footage, yet much of the footage in the movie is pointless and boring. For example, there is

a fifteen minute conversation about a lost apple.

That was fifteen minutes too long, and fifteen minutes of my life I’d like back- I don’t care at all if some lady lost her apple. This is just one example, there were others.

It was nice to get a glimpse at life in a country so far away from me, but the documentary could have been a lot better.
