This is one of PD James’ better stories, and opens with a horrifying experience - a student nurse died from poisoning during a nursing demonstration session, in front of student mates and visitors. When a second student died under suspicious circumstances, the bigwigs at the hospital felt that their local constabulary

were not capable of handling the investigation; so Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh of New Scotland Yard was called in. Dagliesh discovered secrets of sexual entanglements, blackmail and scandals among the hospital staff and students. He was attacked one night, and shortly after that, one of the sisters was murdered.

      • What could have happened to arouse such violence within a hospital?

The interviews that Dalgliesh conducted with the student nurses and the staff provided an insight into the feelings of superiority and ill-disguised nonchalance in the nursing community. The story had a number of clever plots and twists, one of which

involved suspected Nazi war criminals. I found Dalgliesh’s assistant, Sergeant Masterson terribly hard-headed and egoistical, though he was grudgingly respectful and in awe of his superior. A pleasant though rather disturbing story about the darker side of human emotions, where tedious devotion could breed contempt and led to extreme acts, such as murder!
