I have been playing The Sims series since the original came out quite a while back. Moving up to the second was a major upgrade that kept me entertained for years. The Sims 3 was no different, although it was not as much of an improvement as before.

The Sims 3 brings graphic updates game-wide. The Sims look much more realistic now, although they still speak the same smile-worthy language that is impossible to understand. The music has also been improved and is now a pleasure to listen to (I could never really stand

      it in the older games).

The game also brings a complete re-do of the skills system. There is now charisma, athleticism, writing, painting, to name a few. The game implements these well and all play an important part in customizing a Sim. It is possible to support a small household on gardening alone, for example.

The traits system has also received a revamp, leading to a long list of choices. I have made plenty of Sims just to see how the different qualities change the game. While it is possible to play the game with ...

      • any traits, some give an advantage over others. Traits also dictate your lifetime wishes, which is the major point of the game and the key to living out a fulfilled and happy life.

The unique sense of humor giving the previous two games has made a return, as well, ensuring little bits of fun in unexpected places. These are little reminders of the developers who created the game and are worth noting solely for the extra touch of joy they add.

Finally, the careers (part-time, full-time, and unofficial such as writing) add a final level

of complexity to the game, ensuring you many different ways to play the game. I have not tried a stay-at-home parent so far, as babies are as stressful in the game as they are in real life, but I look forward to giving them a shot in the future.

The Sims 3 is guaranteed to provide hours of amusement, especially if you enjoyed the first two games as much as I have. If you simply don’t “get it,” The Sims 3 is an excellent game to test-drive. It’s a great game from a great company.
