  • Personally I think the video is clever and the lyrics make some interesting comments on society as a whole, even if they weren’t written in order to do this, but the song itself isn’t all that great
  • Yes there are some clever things about it but for the most part, the music and the way the song comes together as a whole is pretty average in my opinion, there’s nothing too special about it
  • The reason that I like the lyrics to this song so much is because they seem to make a good social commentary about human beings becoming jaded to life and becoming trapped in a routine, no longer experiencing the pure and innocent wonder that they used to, the ending part of the video does a really good job of showing this in my opinion as well
  • Unfortunately, Redundant isn’t really a song where I get the feel for the classic Green Day sound or energy either
  • I think that the concept of the video is pretty clever, just showing a bunch of tasks basically being looped, but the video is sort of boring because Redundant itself doesn’t strike me as an amazing song

Overview – Redundant, the third music video released by Green Day for promotion of their album Nimrod makes commentary on the routine that society has fallen into and how the citizens in it have fallen asleep, although I make it seem more critical than it actually is. I’ve read that Armstrong wrote this song about his relationship with his wife but I personally think that’s excellent society commentary before I can find parallels between his lyrics and Buddhist beliefs to be honest, but I’ll talk more about this later in the sections about the song and the video itself. Personally I think the video is clever and the lyrics make some interesting comments on society as a whole, even if they weren’t written in order to do this, but the song itself isn’t all that great. Yes there are some clever things about it but for the most part, the music and the way the song comes together as a whole is pretty average in my opinion, there’s nothing too special about it.

      The Song – Redundant as

a song, in my opinion, is really just average work with nothing all that great about it. The reason that I like the lyrics to this song so much is because they seem to make a good social commentary about human beings becoming jaded to life and becoming trapped in a routine, no longer experiencing the pure and innocent wonder that they used to, the ending part of the video does a really good job of showing this in my opinion as well. However, despite some clever lyrics, the song isn’t all that great. Armstrong’s vocal melody isn’t bad at all and the chorus is pretty catchy to be honest, but the song feels like it drags on for way too long. Even though the instrumental section in the middle of the song isn’t really that long in reality, it feels like it just keeps going on and on because it really just fills up time in my opinion, the song is only around three and a half minutes but it feels like it’s so much longer.

      • Unfortunately, Redundant isn’t really a song where I get the feel for the classic Green Day sound or energy either. Musically the song really isn’t anything special at all, but I suppose that the lyrics would be the strongpoint of the song, at least to me because of the connections I make with them at least.

The Video – The video to Redundant is very, well, redundant. The camera stays completely still throughout the entire music video and the background of the film honestly seems like it’s just on a loop because people just keep coming in, performing a task, leaving, and repeat. Personally I think this aspect of the video is clever because it makes commentary on how people have fallen asleep and how they’ve fallen into a routine without really being mindful or aware of their own life. Although I’m almost positive that Armstrong didn’t write it about society, since he wrote it regarding his relationship, I find it really interesting how well his lyrics describe the state of modern society. I’m personally really interested

in philosophy, primarily Eastern, and Buddhist belief agrees that people have fallen asleep and have become so caught up in a routine that they know nothing else. When Armstrong takes the newspaper at the end of this music video and the woman comes in to see it’s not there, she freaks out because her ordinary routine is broken and now she knows nothing else. Small things about the music video like this are what really make me like it. However, the music video also strikes me as slightly boring, probably because the song itself really isn’t anything too special. I think that the concept of the video is pretty clever, just showing a bunch of tasks basically being looped, but the video is sort of boring because Redundant itself doesn’t strike me as an amazing song. In terms of concept and execution, the video turned out very well. However, in terms of the song, despite some clever lyrics and commentary, the music itself doesn’t strike me as anything too special and it really doesn’t draw my attention that well.
