Tarifa is considered the European mecca for kite and windsurfing. As an kitesurf instructor I worked and lived there for the last couple of years and can only agree with that.

Many great riders over wintering and training there will tell you the same, you can kite basically every day, ranging from side offshore howling, gusty, warm levante to the more constant but chilly poniente.

From the 15th of june till the 15th of September it is allowed to kite only in the designated areas, playa

de los lances and playa de valdevaqueros.

Los lances is a very wide and sandy beach about 3 kilometers from town, with levante (n-e) the wind can be very off shore here so be careful, in summer there is a boat rescue service on the site.

With poniente it becomes more wavy and perfectly safe, that is why it gets very very crowded in summer, all schools (about 30) will be there.

For this reason more experienced riders better stay upwind in order to avoid herds ...

      • of students in their way.

Valdevaqueros is about 10 kilometers from town direction Cadiz and is a very small beach which you share on the downwind side with windsurfers.

Levante comes in a little more side shore here and is usually a little stronger.

Sometimes in summer there might be some termic poniente even if there is nothing anywhere else.

        Can be really crowded.

Out of the main season you might kite where you like from Tarifa up to Punta Paloma, about 12 kilometers of beach

with sometimes even a small lagoon with flat water in front of the Rio Jara camping, only with very high tide anyway.

Kite size may vary between 5 sqm with levante and flat water and a 14 sqm with light poniente.

Who is looking for some waves better check CaƱos de Mecca with strong levante it can get really good especially during the winter months.

A good destination both for the beginner that needs big sandy beaches and the advanced rider that will like the variety of conditions Tarifa has to offer .
