Ever felt there are too many racing games on PC but not any usual driving? This is what I had thougt when I was looking for a game like Euro Truck Simulator. In fact, I was not looking for a “truck simulation” game specifically, but a more realistic driving game…

There are many great racing games out there now, such as Dirt 2, Need for Speed Shift and Grid. They all have grabbed some part of realism and they all have a style. But they have something in common, those games are not actually driving games, but racing…

As most of us are looking for more realism in todays games, it just doesn’t feel so realistic to play racing games on my PC. Because racing, doesn’t happen often in real life. However, usual

driving is different. Driving in todays complicated traffic conditions is a challange itself and I want to experience it on PC.

Long stories short, I will give you direct results. There aren’t any realistic and good quality usual driving games. There are only two considerable games on the market, and one of them is Euro Truck Simulator.

This game is not as professionally made as NFS Shift, I mean the sound effects, graphics and technologic side of the game is not that strong, but still enjoyable. You’ll be responsible of moving cargo from city to city in Europe, you’ll have to care about traffic signs on the road, traffic lights, speed limiations, crashing other vehicles and even keeping your headlights on during night time driving.

If you fail to achieve the points I ...

      • listed above, you will get a fine for the traffic offence. Moving cargos will help you earn money. The money can be spent to buy better trucks from the truck dealer, to buy fuel for your truck, to unlock business with new countries , to upgrade your truck and to buy certificates for moving dangerous goods such as oil and acid.

The gameplay is quiet good, you can feel yourself in the truck if you play with the cockpit view. The mirrors, wipers can help you in your navigation, and using signal lights when changing the direction also important just like in real life. I liked the artifical intelligence reaction to that, they will use their horns to warn you, or will change their direction – decrease their speed to avoid crashes.

After installing the game, you can download the latest update for a few fixes, and access for an extra country: Great Britain! This patch will make a music player available, it is not great, but still OK. It can’t play MP3 files, you have to convert them to another format (OGG as I remember). Getting on a Ferry to go to Britain is a good feeling in this game :)

Conclusion: The Good: Lots of countries and cities to visit, realistic driving (you will feel traffic pressure, and even engine limitations in some occasions), pleasant scenery, realistic traffic flow, enjoyable navigation

The Bad: Repetitive gameplay, undetailed cities, unlicenced trucks with fake names, a better music player is necessary for the game, lack of atmospheric situations (I have only experienced rain and flashing rainy nights.)
