I’ve become a big fan of ESPN’s more informal programs. I already talked about Sportsnation, but the other one that I’ve really been digging lately is Around the Horn. Like any sports show, they talk about the major sports stories. Like First Take, the format is more of a debate, but rather than have two people going head to head, there are four sportswriters from across the country who get together via satellite.

Also notable is the elimination style game play. When I first started

watching the show, I was confused as to how the scoring worked as there was no set pattern to what gets points and what doesn’t. Essentially, the points they make determines…how many points they make. It’s moderated by Tony Reali who adds his own personal style to hosting duties.

The interplay between the five is what really makes it work. While they take the issues they’re discussing seriously, they also have a rather oddball style that makes the show fun to watch. Random ...

      • references will also come from nowhere, Tony once made a reference to Legend of Zelda and another time a game was determined by the fact that one of the debaters pantomimed Rock em Sock em Robots.

Some of the scoring may seem rather arbitrary but it’s all for the sake of entertainment and in that regard, this show succeeds in spades.

With the spread of “talking heads” shows when it comes to the media, it’s good to have a few that don’t take themselves too seriously and just

have fun. That’s another thing that shines through, you can tell that they’re having fun doing what they do and you, in turn, can have fun watching it. Working on that show seems like a pretty sweet gig, though I’m no sports expert. It seems like a good time is had by all. If you’re looking for something different to watch, this is definitely unique. Some episodes bring the lol’s more than others, but every episode is entertaining to watch on some level.
