The Chrysalids is a post apocalyptic science fiction novel which was written by the well known author John Wyndham and first published int he year 1955. When I first heard of the novel, I had gotten it one summer since it was one of the books I was to be studying the next term in high school. I remember that at the time I had read the summary of it and

had found the entire concept of human evolution and a future society with mutants very interesting; but I was young still and found reading the book itself and going through it in detail beyond tedious. Nevertheless, it was only when I got a little older, closer to my age now, when I realised what a well written and thought out book it really is. I now think the book “The Chrysalids” ...

      • goes beyond science fiction since it covers many philosophical questions like the one “What is normal?”

The book is about a young man David, who lives in a very religious farming society which is forms many years after a nuclear explosion in those parts. The radiation that lingered ,any years afte the explosion caused a lot of mutation amongst children born later; but being a very puritanical society, these children were

either killed or sent to a place called “The Fringes”. David soon realised that a small group of young people and himself contain a telepathic gift, but as soon as they slip up hiding it, they have to go on the run.

I thought the book, which is written from David’s point of view is full of adventure, and that is why I would recommend it to mostly children ages thirteen and over.
