  • Just for the fan service alone, this game is definitely worth the $50 retail price for any fan of the series
  • It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of Super Mario Galaxy, but it is definitely the best side scrolling Super Mario Bros

The New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Wii is a wonderful combination of old school Mario game play and rampant fan service. I picked up this excellent new game on the day it was released (November 15th, 2009). Within minutes, I was hooked by the modern take on classic side scrolling game play and the obvious references to previous games in the series, specifically Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.

      The graphics are

crisp and clean and the new theme music is just as engaging as the musical tracks from previous games (all of which is present in this game as well). The game feels eerily similar to Super Mario Bros. 3, in both presentation and storyline. All of the old characters and enemies have returned, including the Koopalings, and a slew of new enemies add to the fun.

After about four hours of single player play, I had ...

      • reached the third world and uncovered a few small secrets. A very familiar blister had formed on my thumb, unused to holding a Nintendo controller for so long. From just a little play, I could tell that the difficulty curve was reminiscent to that in Super Mario Bros. 3, hard but not impossible. Also, the control scheme proved to be mostly solid, though an extra button or two would probably make it slightly easier
and reduce the development of my blister.

Just for the fan service alone, this game is definitely worth the $50 retail price for any fan of the series. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of Super Mario Galaxy, but it is definitely the best side scrolling Super Mario Bros. game ever made. Finally, due to the new and unique multiplayer action, any fan of the series should purchase this game as great fun for the entire family.
