My roommate was under the mistaken impression that this was a Tim Burton film. In actuality, Tim Burton had nothing to do with it, but you can see why he would be under that impression.

The movie is based off of a novel by Neil Gaiman, of “Sandman” fame. It tells the story of a young girl who’s curious, brave and somewhat plucky.

You can probably guess, that her name is Coraline, though everyone assumes she means Caroline.

She’s quite bored with her life, they’ve moved away from her friends and her parents are too busy to really talk to her. She comes across a doorway to another world where she is cared for by bizarro duplicates of her parents. This alternate world is lively and bizarre, the attention causes tension between her and her real parents.

Visually, this movie is stunning. It’s captivating and you can’t help but take your eyes off of it. That said, it’s a very weird movie. Like, seriously, it’s downright bizarre. It’s well made, the voice acting is top notch (they got Keith David so you know at least one role is going ...

to absolutely own), and the stop motion animation was really well done. It has a whimsical air to it that you would expect from Neil Gaiman.

Watching this, you can almost feel like Burton had a hand in it, it’s very much in that style, though it’s much lighter in tone. It’s a really good family film. It balances that fine

line between being appealing to both children and adults. It has some scary moments, but nothing traumatizing. The characters are well fleshed out and leave an impression, even if it is just one of perplexity.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this movie. While it is certainly bizarre, I was entertained from beginning to end and have no problem recommending this movie.
