  • Pentax was one of the first brands of cameras I bought when I decided to turn my jewelry-making hobby into a full blown online business and needed a decent camera to take decent pictures of my jewelry
  • The black and orange is what I purchased, because it's all the store had at the time, but I know you can find it online in about four different color combinations, including a white and pink one (which, because I'm a girly-girl at heart, I'd have probably gotten if it had been available at the time)
  • The camera's autofocus is quick enough, but I found when I was taking close up shots of my jewelry, that the picture quality just wasn't up to par
  • And I was taking a LOT of pictures on a daily basis, and I noticed that as time went on, the picture quality actually lessened
  • I've found better cameras for the same price that have a longer lasting power than this one, but I do have to say that I really enjoyed the picture editing software that comes with this camera

Pentax was one of the first brands of cameras I bought when I decided to turn my jewelry-making hobby into a full blown online business and needed a decent camera to take decent pictures of my jewelry. Since I was starting small, I didn’t need a superb expensive camera, and figured I’d work my way up to that if the need arose. Unfortuantely, the need hasn’t arisen yet, but I’m still working on it! The Pentax Optio WS80 10MP Waterproof Digital Camera caught my eye immediately when I went camera shopping because if it’s durable design. You could drop this camera, from the top of a building, and I felt secure enough in its casing and design that it’d still be in one piece when I made it down the three flight of stairs to fetch it. Plust it comes in a variety of color combinations. The black and orange is what I purchased, because it’s all the store had at the time, but I know you can find it online in about four different

color combinations, including a white and pink one (which, because I’m a girly-girl at heart, I’d have probably gotten if it had been available at the time).

It’s a 10mp camera, which most digital cameras are these days, and has a 5x internal zoom. I always prefer an external zoom if one is available, but really it tends to depend on the camera and how well it functions. With this zoom, you can extend about 20 feet before it starts to look grainy and distorted, but that’s better than most cameras for this price range offers. It’s about a $200 camera if you can manage to find a good deal on it. I’m not much of a swimmer, because I have a fear of fish (silly, I know), but when I do venture out to take pictures of wildlife, I know I can take this camera swimming with me, and it allows you to take take pictures up to five feet in the water for about an hour and a half (it says two hours,

      • but I haven’t found that lasting power to be true). It’s got features that automatically compensate for shaking hands when taking pictures, so it’s rare you’ll get a blurry basic picture, say, if you’re taking a picture of your kids playing outside and you’re moving the camera to keep up with the action. It records HD video, but I never had much an opportunity to play with that option since the camera was mostly for business purposes.

The camera’s autofocus is quick enough, but I found when I was taking close up shots of my jewelry, that the picture quality just wasn’t up to par. The shots were grainy, regardless of settings or light. Sometimes I get an excellent shot, and the next shot, without moving the camera or item being shot, would be grainy. No real consistency in quality. And I was taking a LOT of pictures on a daily basis, and I noticed that as time went on, the picture quality actually lessened. By the sixth month, the camera was shutting off on

its own, running out of battery power very quickly, and taking grainy shots ALL the time and not just some of the time. I’ve found better cameras for the same price that have a longer lasting power than this one, but I do have to say that I really enjoyed the picture editing software that comes with this camera. It’s one of my favorite to date, and even with new cameras of a different brand, I still use the editing software that came with this camera. It’s easy to use and has a lot of really nice features. You can change color photos into sepia or black and white through the editing program and not just on the camera itself, so it’s less buttons to shuffle through when you’re actually in the process of taking pictures. The features on the camera itself are also easy to navigate.

Overall, this camera might be a good beginner camera for a young adult, but just not sufficient enough for someone who needs a camera to do more than take shots of family and friends.
