Manny Pacquiao, dubbed today as the pound-for-pound king in boxing, gives every Filipino reason to be proud and hopeful. He came from humble beginnings in General Santos City and got into boxing just to have a means of living to raise his family. He got more than what he asked for, because he is now a billionaire and considered a hero in his country.

I watched the three episodes so far of HBO 24/7 that features the daily training of Pacquiao for his fight against Miguel Cotto a week from now. It is a brilliant pre-fight documentary that people could watch to get to

know more about these two great fighters. I’m in awe at how Manny Pacquiao remains grounded despite of his large sum of savings and influence. His training in Baguio is sort of disrupted because of the recent super typhoon that destroyed major infrastructures of Northern Philippines. While he remains focused in his training, Pacquiao does not forget the victims of the said calamity. Though he could not personally visit them to extend his help, his trainer Freddie Roach and assistant Buboy went in his place.

Last week, news broke that Pacquiao is this month’s cover feature in the prestigious Time Magazine. That puts him ...

      • in the ranks of Cory Aquino, another Filipino and former president who was also featured in the said magazine. I promised myself I will get a copy of this magazine once it hits the stands next week.

Pacquiao’s contagion spreads like wildfire in the country. Each of his fight is always met with eagerness among the millions of his fans. In fact, I already have my own ticket for his fight against Cotto this Sunday. Win or lose, his influence among us could not be discounted. He makes me very proud to be a Filipino. Through him, he gives hope to my countrymen. His

humility is very commendable, and his faith to his religion very inspiring.

At the age of 30 he has accomplished so much that exceeds many of those who’ve had a college degree and now working in the ranks. I admire his passion for his craft. There is no tinge of shame as he admits how he got started. Through boxing, he was able to provide for his family and even his extended family. And now, through sheer hard work, he has gained the respect of even the most influential people around the world. If he is being blessed this much, it is because he is truly deserving.
