This fantasy tale stars Jet Li and Jackie Chan. The story’s not exactly original, a mystical artifact transports a 20th century teenager who’s into Kung fu movies back to ancient China to embark on a mystical quest. There’s a bit of backstory about a monkey king who fights a tyrant and such.

That’s not really why you’re watching the movie though, you’re doing it to see the stylized fights. In this regard, they succeed. There are some initial wire scenes that are pretty poorly done, but once you hit the

Jackie Chan/Jet Li fight, it’s all good.

Speaking of that fight, that was the peak of the movie. One of the reasons that “War” fails as a movie is because while you have Jason Statham battling Jet Li, they rarely interact and the final climax is only a couple of minutes long. The battle between these two is an epic martial arts brawl deserving of a fight between these two experts. Jackie Chan is the second person, aside from DMX, who has actually been able to hold his own in a ...

      • fight. That’s one of the things I dislike about Jet Li, he’s a good actor, but you know that people are rarely going to get the drop on him. While it’s fun to see him pummel the hell out of mooks, seeing a worthy foe would be more enjoyable.

Watching this movie does make you want to go out and learn kung fu. It’s unfortunate that all fights aren’t this epic and stylized. It would certainly make things look more interesting.

The story’s a bit thin and

the acting is…passable. The special effects are well done for the most part, though there are some bad instances, again early in the film. If you’re a fan of Kung fu movies, than this is one worth checking out. Even if you’re just looking for an entertaining popcorn flick, this comes moderately recommended. The fight scenes are the reason to watch this movie. If you want more than that, than this isn’t for you. I wouldn’t recommend buying it, but it’s definitely worth renting and checking out.
