Beast Wars - Deep Metal introduces a new Maximal to the series: Depth Charge. In some ways, he seems as if he is intended to take the place of Dinobot, who was killed in the last season because he is more aggressive and eager to fight, he is distant from the other Maximals and sometimes challenges Optimus directly.

He arrives on prehistoric Earth in search of Rampage, who murdered many of his friends a long time ago.

      That is his one

      and only goal: revenge.

This helps to create some entertaining friction between him and the Maximals and create for some intense and enjoyable action and dialogue between him and Rampage in this episode and others.

Also in this episode, Blackarachnia begins her new allegiance with the Maximals, although she still identifies herself as a Predicon and her attitude, much like Depth Charge’s, causes friction and tension within the Maximal ranks.

Tension and friction never quite existed between the Maximals, with the exception of when Dinobot was around.

He was really only the character that did not get along very easily with the others and had opinions that clashed with the views of the others.

It is good for a show to have conflict as it makes for more realistic and enjoyable stories and this episode and the third season certainly offers conflict in the form of Blackarachnia and Depth Charge.

This episode, unlike the previous four episodes, has less action and is ...

more character-driven, which is fine, because the material used in this episode is entertaining.

This episode also shows the Maximals continuing to work on building their new base within the volcano where the Ark is located in order to protect it from Megatron and the Predicons.

The Ark will need to be protected, too, as later episodes prove! I miss the old Maximal base, because I feel it was well-designed and there were some great battles that involved it, but the

new base is alright and certainly provides for more stunning visuals, with the Ark in the background and the molten lava below.

All in all, this is certainly one of the better episodes of the season, thanks in part to the time dedicated to the characters and depth given to Depth Charge, and to thanks to the first encounter between Depth Charge and Rampage.

It is intense and fun to watch thanks to the voice actors, dialogue, camera angles and animation.
