Caledonian MacBrayne is a government-owned company that provides ferry services between the western Scottish mainland and many of the nation’s islands. Its distinctive black and white ships with red funnels are a very familiar sight in some of the remoter parts of Scotland, and can prove an absolute lifeline when weather conditions are bad.

I have been on several Caledonian MacBrayne crossings, and have always had a good experience.

For example, I visited the Isle of Mull from the mainland port of Oban, and this crossing was undertaken by a large ferry capable of carrying many hundreds of passengers and dozens of cars. There were plenty of facilities for food, drink and relaxation, and the ferry was spacious and had lots of room to move around.

On another occasion, I went to the much smaller Isle of Eigg,

      • which has a population of under one hundred, this time from the port of Mallaig in the Western Highlands. The ferry which made this crossing was a great deal smaller, and there was more of a local community feel to it, with supplies for the island’s only shop being taken across at the same time as tourists like me. However, the ship was still large enough to feel
safe in the fairly choppy sea.

I really enjoyed travelling with Caledonian MacBrayne, and would certainly recommend this company’s ferries to visitors to Scotland. Better still, it is possible to obtain substantial discounts by travelling at quiet times, and in some cases multiple-journey tickets can be booked in advance. If you are on holiday in western Scotland, you will not regret a day out by CalMac, as the locals know it!
