Catalina Island Marine Institute is a great learning experience for all ages. It is a place where students can pay to stay the week and learn all there is to know about wild life and the ocean. The institute is in one isolated corner of the island where there are not many waves and it is safe for people to swim out far in the water.

When I was in 7th grade I took the program for a week and it is

really worth 300$. You get quality food and if you need special food made for you they do it for no extra expense.

If you are a student you share a room with another fellow student. The rooms are well kept like the rest of the area and it all looks new.

Every morning you have an option to take a morning walk at six o’clock up and down the hill. It is really refreshing to wake up and see the ocean ...

      • after a small walk.

There are really great educational programs too, of course. They have a plankton lab with microscopes, computers and screens.

The algae lab is filled with algae everywhere you look and you learn all about the different types. You also learn about the everyday products we use that has algae.

The invertebrate lab is filled with tanks of living invertebrate from the sea. Some of the creatures that I remembered were sea cucumbers, sea slugs, huge snails and sea

        stars.

You were allowed to touch them and pick them up as long as you were gentle. We also took a class on how to identify fish because later we went snorkeling into the ocean with wet suits.

It’s really quite the experience nothing can compare to, seeing all those fish in their habitats. There are many more labs and activities that were fun to see and do.

In all, you should go there yourself when you have a chance because you won’t regret it!
