  • While I agree that it has beautiful beaches and is one of the more iconic destinations on the Gold Coast that I am sure visitors would not want to miss I couldn't recommend staying there for any extended period of time, if at all
  • Anything the least bit interesting is overrun by busloads of tourists
  • The misconception about Surfers is that it has the best beaches on the Gold Coast, but there is plenty of beaches which are just as beautiful in other places, particularly Coolangatta which has large expanses that are never crowded and surf that is so good it attracts professional surfers and competitions on a regular basis

As a resident of the Gold Coast it became very apparent to me what the term ‘tourist trap’ actually means from the time that I spent at Surfer’s Paradise.

While I agree that it has beautiful beaches and is one of the more iconic destinations on the Gold Coast that I am sure visitors would not want to miss I couldn’t recommend staying there for any extended period of time, if at all.

It is quite easy to get to Surfers from just about anywhere, the trip from Tweed Heads right on the border of Queensland and New South

Wales is only about half an hour by bus and less by car. The benefit of staying elsewhere close by is that it is less crowded and much less expensive. Everything in Surfers is overpriced from accomodation to takeaway coffee. Anything the least bit interesting is overrun by busloads of tourists. Catching a bus there at night is painful because they stop a few times on every block and do not seem to have any concern for how drunk and unruly many of the passengers are. I don’t mind drinking myself, but this is the place where I ...

      • have seen the most filthiest behavior (men exposing themselves to teenage girls for example) and violence (punch ups where the police have been called) on public transport.

Surfers Paradise is particularly well known in Australia for schoolies week which is an event for students that have just finished high school to cut loose for a week - and they certainly do. Most of these students are just 18 or even underage, the streets are filled with drunk and unruly teens all night long. According to local news and gossip the most common crimes that are committed are vandalism and

sexual assault. Generally I don’t believe that the vast majority are bad kids but it is not a fun time to be around Surfers for anyone but these hoards of party animals.

The misconception about Surfers is that it has the best beaches on the Gold Coast, but there is plenty of beaches which are just as beautiful in other places, particularly Coolangatta which has large expanses that are never crowded and surf that is so good it attracts professional surfers and competitions on a regular basis. You can see taller buildings in Surfers from Coolangatta beach the two are so close.
