  • Jack himself is a lot more interesting in this
  • In my opinion, it doesn't match up the original movie
  • Perhaps if Kubrick hadn't gotten around to that movie, this might seem a lot better, but unfortunately, the legacy of Kubrick's version hangs over this

Any fan of the original Shining movie will know Stephen King wasn’t best pleased with Kubrick’s adaptation, and in this mini-series, King has the chance to rectify those issues and bring in ignored elements of the book.

The story is the same, the Torrence family spend the winter in the Overlook Hotel as caretakers, with the sinister forces at

      different ending in this version.

In my opinion, it doesn’t match up the original movie. Perhaps if Kubrick hadn’t gotten around to that movie, this might seem a lot better, but unfortunately, the legacy of Kubrick’s version hangs over this. It all seems pale and pallid, lifeless at times and while the core cast do well enough, they don’t

have the grab of the original key players.

Certainly worth a look if you’re a King fan, this isn’t one of the worst adaptations and will please fans of the novel who might have felt short changed that some of the more interesting moments were neglected from the original film.

An interesting alternative you might enjoy, but don’t expect brilliance.
