  • For the paying customer, these stores usually provide a good retail experience, however for the customer selling his or her goods, they’ll have a tougher time of things, and CEX is no different in that respect
  • In walking distance of several rival retailers, it won’t take you too long at all to compare some prices on the same item and judge the best deal
  • If you haven’t been to this store yet I’d highly recommend it, and if you’ve got reservations about used goods stores than check this one out as the quality of service and items will no doubt surprise you

CEX, also known as Computer Exchange, is a UK wide high street specialising in the buying and selling of used goods including DVDs, computer games, game consoles and other media devices. It’s somewhat similar to the UK’s other used goods store, Cash Convertors, which will take your used goods for cash or store credit and sell on those goods at a discounted price to customers. For the paying customer, these stores usually provide a good retail experience, however for the customer selling his or her goods, they’ll have a tougher time of things, and CEX is no different in that respect. First off though, I’ll go through some of the stores good points. One thing that’s pretty faultless about the place is its wide array of stock, particularly in its bigger stores such as this one.

You’ll not only find plenty of recent releases on sale at a discounted price, but rarer, more obscure titles you won’t necessarily find in more routine high street stores are often readily available here. Also, these kinds of titles are usually sold at very reasonable prices, unlike the higher rates other stores will sell them for. The pricing system seems to reflect supply and demand, with more popular items selling at the higher prices, while lesser known titles and items will be priced lower

more often than not; good news for the bargain hunter with a less than well known thing on their wish list. The DVD stock is particularly well represented, with a wide selection of television and film on offer.

In more recent years, the scope of this stock as broadened further. You’ll find a respectable selection of world cinema and adult entertainment amongst other things, particularly well represented in the larger stores such as this one. You may find that newer titles might be priced a little highly, often only matching or even priced over the same item brand new in another store, but prices drop quickly and it’s worth waiting for those drops. Video games are another big part of the store’s stock, with all the main consoles being catered for.

You’ll find a particularly wide selection when it comes to older consoles such as the PS2, and a great deal of bargain prices for some particularly good titles. Newer consoles such as the Wii and PS3 haven’t managed to amount too many bargains just yet, but it shouldn’t be too long before these newer consoles and titles follow suit. In addition to these, the store offers a selection of consoles, televisions, mobile phones and other media devices, but in my experience, these aren’t priced as reasonably as their other ...

      • items. The store may offer a warranty, but ultimately, I’ve always felt more comfortable purchasing these bigger items brand new from other stores as the prices are never that different.

As mentioned before, the store will also buy your items for cash or store credit. You’ll get a little more for your item if you opt for store credit, but neither option will really put much cash in your pocket. If you’ve a lot of old unwanted items you want to offload, this might be an option for you to make some cash but selling your goods online or through other ads is probably the better option. I wouldn’t go as far to say this process is extortionate, but the sums they offer for your goods don’t reflect the price they’ll them on for by a long way; there’s far too big a profit margin to make consider it a good deal.

However, in the stores defence this difference has been growing smaller more recently meaning for a fairer deal. Still, the store itself offers a pleasant shopping experience. This Sheffield store in particular is laid out in an easy to navigate way, with a simple shelving system for the stock complete with wide aisles and plenty of floorspace so customers can browse the goods comfortably. The sales staff has

always proven helpful and pleasant and the cash desks are almost always manned by several sales staff which makes the payment process a lot quicker.

The store also offers an online service via its website which allows customers to track down a certain title and either finds out which stores stock it, or allows them to order it online. The prices of items are also made clear on this website which makes your shopping experience all the more simple. This particular store, with its city centre location makes for a great place to check out rival prices and compare prices before spending money you don’t need to. In walking distance of several rival retailers, it won’t take you too long at all to compare some prices on the same item and judge the best deal.

Throughout the UK you’ll find many more stores, but this one is particularly well stocked and expansive. There’s smaller stores, sometimes only specialising in certain items like mobile phones, but this store manages to cover a lot of bases, leaving even the most demanding customer not wanting for much. If you haven’t been to this store yet I’d highly recommend it, and if you’ve got reservations about used goods stores than check this one out as the quality of service and items will no doubt surprise you.

This store will buy those items if the condition is good. Unfortunately, you`re looking for about 25-40 pounds for each of the phones, with a slightly better return if you accept store credit. I personally wouldn`t suggest either option - the difference between what they`ll pay you and what they later sell them on for is too great, a bit of a rip-off. You`d be better of selling your items online, through Ebay or Amazon. Amazon will also give you a better idea on rival prices to help you decide your own selling price. Going by the listings for your two items on Amazon - you`ll likely earn five times as much through Amazon then you would through CEX.
