On a recent trip to Beijing I stayed at Zen Hostel. Its location was quite deceiving, certainly not what I expected from reading the website. It was located down an alley where there is a lot of shouting throughout the day.

At least the night was quiet? That was a certain downside. For a hostel, the room was decent.

Small, but okay for what it?s for. It is certainly not the place to book if you want to spend a great deal of time

in the room, but if you are in Beijing for the sights and will be out most of the day, the hostel is okay.

Not perfectly clean, but far from the kind of dirty that some hostels are notorious for. Some rooms, like mine, had their own bathroom.

However, in typical Chinese style the shower is open as a part of the bathroom with the drain built in the tile floor, so it can get messy and things can?t be stored in the bathroom. Neither ...

      • can an electrical outlet be put there.

An extreme problem for those needing a hair dryer or curling iron. There isn?t a mirror in the room either, only in the bathroom, so the TV is the best reflective surface you have to do you hair by.

Very disappointing and frustrating. The good thing about the hostel, and most of China, is that you can bargain for the price you want.

I generally hate bargaining for things, but this time I was happy about it.

Instead of paying the same rate that other foreigners there booked for, I bargained for a better price and ended up paying nearly ? of the normal booking price.

Additionally, the hostel will rent a car and driver to you for a day. It?s rather convenient if you are going to the Great Wall as you can simply relax and enjoy the sights on the way there instead of worrying about anything like catching or missing a bus.
