  • I thought this was awful lazy of the writers and that they did a disservice to fans of those characters
  • That aside, the battles in this episode are handled exceptionally well and the characters that are mutated due to the shock wave created by the destruction of the alien device look fantastic - definitely improvements over their previous forms

The first episode of the second series of Beast Wars is technically the fourth part in a six parter. This episode picks up directly where the second part of “Other Voices” left off and deals with the aftermath of that episode’s events.

First of all, it is obvious that with the start of this season, the show received an increase in budget.

Everything from the character models to the landscape to the Maximal base look great.

That is not to say that the previous season was one that was full

of low resolution and lightly detailed CGI, but compared to season two, there is a definite improvement.

Second of all, I do not like that five minutes in to this episode, that two prominent characters are just suddenly killed off, and are given no mention whatsoever afterward.

Their deaths are barely shown and then they are gone.

I thought this was awful lazy of the writers and that they did a disservice to fans of those characters.

It is almost as lazy and disgraceful as the massive killing of characters ...

      • in the season three series finale.

That aside, the battles in this episode are handled exceptionally well and the characters that are mutated due to the shock wave created by the destruction of the alien device look fantastic - definitely improvements over their previous forms.

This episode also continues to showcase Blackarachnia’s treacherous streak and Tarantulas’ control over her remains as strong as it has been.

Although not a whole lot happens in this episode aside from the mutations of the characters, the last thirty seconds of the episode end

on sort of a mysterious cliffhanger that sets things up for the next episode and gives the impression that a new transformer is about to enter the Beast Wars.

All in all, this season opener accomplishes a good amount, I would say.

There is grieving on part of the Maximals, some characters undergo mutations and gain new abilities that are shown off well, the battles are well executed, Blackarachnia and Tarantulas continue their struggle and the show ends on a cliffhanger.

A very good start to my favorite season of the show.
