A keeshond is a breed of dog that originated in Holland. Keeshonds are medium sized with long gray fur. I had my keeshond, Silver Fox, for seven years until the family moved into an apartment and we had to find a new home for him. He was a wonderful dog and I miss him to this day.

Keeshonds, including Silver Fox, are very beautiful dogs. People were always coming up to me and telling me how gorgeous he looked. He had dark “spectacles” around his eyes, looking somewhat like a raccoon. Cream colored

legs, and a coat of various colors, mostly gray, black, and cream. It is a very distinctive coat. Keeshonds in general are very friendly dogs. Silver was very gentle but also protective. He would bark if any stranger entered the yard or came to close to the car when I was in it alone. However, keeshonds do not make good guard dogs. Silver never would attack anyone. Plus keeshonds are relatively small dogs, only thirty to fifty pounds. Too large to be considered a small breed but not big enough to be ...

      • considered a large breed, they are not big enough to be very scary to intruders or enemies of their family.

Keeshonds are known for their intelligence. Silver was a very smart dog. Keeshonds are friendly to everyone in the family. They are not “one man dogs” that have to have only one master. They are also usually safe with children. They are gentle, even tempered dogs. I have found all of these things to be true.

There is one drawback to owning a keeshond. They shed a great deal. The fur is very long and

when its time for it to be shed (twice a year) it gets EVERYWHERE. I remember combing my dog and handfuls of hair would come off him. There would be hair everywhere, all over the house. If you get a keeshond, prepare to do a great deal of vacuuming and cleaning. Also, they need to be brushed frequently.

Despite this flaw, keeshonds are great dogs. Silver was a wonderful companion and then best dog you could ever have. Loyal and gentle, keeshonds make excellent pets for any dog lover willing to give them the care they require.
