We were all sitting at home as it was a bright sunny winter Sunday holiday morning. We were planning an outing but due to difference in opinion amongst the family members, nothing was finalized till noon. Finally everyone unanimously decided for a trip to the National Zoological Park, Delhi. We were too happy to have finally decided something different from those monotonous long drives or visit to shopping malls.

We boarded the car and started for the National Zoological Park, Delhi. Due to a public holiday, there was a huge rush at the zoo. We somehow managed to park our car in the parking provided by the zoo authorities. I found the parking to be a smaller

one than required. Buses were also parked in the same parking leading to even lesser space for cars. The parking is a barren piece of land rather than a proper parking.

The entry tickets to the zoo were reasonably priced and for the kids’ entry, the rate was half than that of the adult. A visitor told me that the tickets price was dirt-cheap a few years ago.

Via a public address system, we were instructed not to carry any food items inside the zoo and so we ate some of the food outside itself and left the remaining snacks in the car. We carried just water bottles inside that were allowed.

Once inside, first we saw a large number ...

      • of migratory birds, swans, ducks and cranes basking in the warmth of the sun. After that we saw the rhino and its baby, monkeys, giraffes, parrots, lion, elephants, deer, zebra and some other animals.

We saw the reptile house too that we did not enjoy because they were hiding under covers.

The kids enjoyed the parrots and macaws section the most. They also loved to see the lion roar at its peak.

I personally felt that some of the water enclosures in the zoo has stagnated, foul smelling water and should be changed periodically.

The zoo was nice but the animal enclosures are far away from one another, making it an on-foot journey of around two hours to completely

go around the zoo. But an interesting option is to hire a seat in the open-air battery operated vans that go around the whole zoo showing the animals. We were on high spirits for an outing and so decided to roam around on foot, and enjoy every moment of our stay at the Delhi zoo.

On our way out, we saw a canteen within the zoo premises itself and had sumptuous food that was reasonably priced. The zoo also has water and toilet facilities at intervals but we saw the absence of security staff that is very necessary in the Delhi zoo to stop people troubling the caged animals.

Otherwise our visit to the National Zoological Park, Delhi was a good experience.
