So begins a six issue arc called “The Six Gun War”. This is notable as Jonah Hex’s major strong point has been that it contained one issue stories that all worked on their own. Occasionally a 2-parter would pop up, but it was like Dini’s Detective Comics in that each issue was self contained.

The comic opens with Jonah falling into a trap by Quentin Turnbull. I’ve only recently gotten into Jonah Hex recently, but my understanding says that this is

Jonah’s arch-nemesis of sorts. Of course, Jonah has made plenty of enemies over the years.

They actually get the drop on him and shoot him before burying him alive.

Fortune smiles upon him as some grave robbers dig him up. One could say that using dumb luck like this isn’t very strong writing, but it wouldn’t really be a fitting end for Jonah.

We also see Tallulah Black, Jonah’s distaff counterpart, as she runs into Bat Lash. I don’t know much about Bat ...

      • Lash, only what I saw in that one episode of “Justice League Unlimited”, but it was a nice touch adding him to the mix.

This story isn’t really new reader friendly, you might have to peruse Wikipedia to get some of the characters’ backstory, but it has the makings for an epic Hex story.

The artwork was solid, and as is usually the case, there are whole pages of artwork with no dialogue. I’m curious to see how the comic translates to

film as each issue has a certain “cinematic” feel to it.

The comic ends with Jonah passing out from his wounds. It’s a bit odd seeing as I’ve seen Jonah endure worse, much worse in fact, and keep on trucking. Seeing him get bested by a single bullet is a bit hard to swallow, but I’m willing to see where they go with it storywise. If you’re a Jonah Hex fan, this is the sort of epic event you’ve been waiting for.
