Beast Wars - The Probe is an episode that is the first of a handful that offers the Maximals with a chance to contact Cybertron and return home. Cybertron sends out several probes in the hopes of locating Optimus and his crew, and both the Maximals and Predicons learn of this when one of the probes begins to approach the planet they crashed on. What ensures is a race: a race by the Maximals to build a communications tower to contact the probe, and a race by the Predicons to destroy it.

Megatron knows that if the Maximals are

successful, Cybertron will send several rescue ships and the Predicons will be vastly outnumbered. And, being the criminals they are, taken into custody.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the show for a couple of reasons. First of all, there is quite a bit of action.

There are several engagements that occur between the Maximals and Predicons, and Optimus makes a valiant struggle near the end of the episode. The scenes are really very well animated and executed, with both factions fighting quite hard.

Another part of the episode that I really like is the subplot that ...

      • focuses on Dinobot. While the other Maximals are jubilant at the prospects of returning home, Dinobot knows that he will not be welcomed and may in fact face the same fate at Megatron and the other Predicons.

Optimus assures him that he will not let that happen, but Dinobot seems to feel that he would be deserving of punishment and that it is honor demands that he face his crimes. The scene is quite memorable and sheds some light on Dinobot’s character.

About the only complaint I have regarding this episode is the Predicons successfully develop a device that

forces a Transformer into beast mode and locks out his or her’s ability to transform. Even though this device is destroyed in this episode, what is stopping the Predicons from building another similar device? Unless the device utilized a component that was the last of its kind, it still nonetheless seems a little odd that the Predicons have a device that could easily help them to win the beast wars, and after this episode, it is never seen again.

Nonetheless, that minor oddity is not enough to ruin what is otherwise a very well acted and executed episode that always entertains me.
