Beast Wars - Gorilla Warfare is an episode that offers quite a lot of action and allows a viewer to see a side of Optimus that is not seen too often in the series. Of course, the only reason Optimus comes unhinged in this episode and becomes excessively aggressive is because Scorponok infects him with a virus, but it is nonetheless quite enjoyable to watch Optimus struggle to hold down all the aggression and urge for violence.

Dinobot, being a warrior and always in search of a way

to claim a glorious victory over the enemy, suggests that the Maximals simply turn Optimus loose on the Predicons and put all the violent tendencies to good use before he destroys the Maximal base.

The other Maximals vehemently oppose the idea because while Optimus would likely succeed in taking out most of the Predicons, he would most certainly be destroyed in the process.

Despite this, Optimus ends up attacking the Predicon base anyway, and what follows is a very well executed and at times intense battle scene that ...

      • has Optimus take Predicon after Predicon down.

This episode, while mainly action-oriented and fast paced, does have some good character moments and offers some character developments.

For one, at the end of the episode, Dinobot visits a recovering Optimus in his quarters, and for the first time really, expresses relief that Optimus is still online and the leader of the Maximals.

In the past, Dinobot has expressed a very real desire to lead the Maximals and each time Optimus has disappeared / faces what seems to be certain

termination, he is okay with it because he sees it as an opportunity to take command.

This episode marks a positive step forward for the two, because up to this episode, there has been quite a bit of conflict between the two.

This episode also solidifies Scorponok’s incompetence as a scientist as this will not be the first time he screws up in devising a virus in his lab.

While relatively light on character moments and development, this episode is one of the show’s more action-oriented episodes and I definitely enjoyed it.
