  • But despite the grim and tragic history of this magnificent square, I have to say it is still an amazing place to visit and one of the main attractions of the entire city
  • It is both beautiful, spacious and I believe after it gets dark is haunted by the both the fog and the students who gave their lives so that their voices might be heard

The first time I went to Tiananmen Square, I was amazed at how large the square actually was. I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised as it once held over a million people during the time China became a united country under the reins of Mao ZeDong on October 1st 1949. I had gone there to see not only the square but also the Forbidden City which was at one end of the square as well as the neighboring parks surrounding the palace. And there is another structure that can be found right in the middle of the square and that is the mausoleum of the great Mao himself, which visitors may go in there during the morning hours to gaze upon the mummified leader’s body laying in state in a glass coffin. I have never gone there because honestly it was too late in the day by the time I arrived, but I intend to

the next time I go visit relatives in Beijing. But within the square itself, you’ll find hundreds of people just walking around, or flying colorful kites overheard, and tour groups milling about absorbing the views or watching the changing of the guards which happen twice in the day, one during morning hours and one during the late afternoon.

I had a very special tour, one not given by the tour guides holding their bright flags to alert their group of where they were. Mine was given by my step-mother’s mother who had taken me there herself the first time I went to visit China. It was there that she told me those dark days when students protested the grim regime of the Chinese government and made headlines across the world with their defiance. She told me that back then, she lived very close to the square and she could hear the announcements of the police as they issued ...

      • warning after warning to the students to disperse and leave the square. Finally, one night she heard them say that anyone who was left after midnight would face grave consequences for their continued resistance. She said that the square was totally filthy by that time because so many students were just camping out there and doing their business right there in the square. However, after that warning, which proved that the government was tired of games, many left that night, however about a hundred students were still left when midnight came. Then at that point, she heard gunfire. Rapid gunfire that went one for several minutes. And after it stopped, she said it was just an unearthly and eerie silence that lingered around the neighborhood. Then, around two in the morning, a neighbor came pounding on the door. He said he was in the square when midnight hit and he said they shut all the lights and
then fired on the remaining students. He was hit in the arm and ran for his life and came to their door for help. They quickly took him to the hospital and she said that the next morning there was still pools of blood splattered all over the square. The students that were left went on an official ‘missing persons’ report, but she believed they were all killed and carried to a remote village for a mass burial, and to this day, no one is allowed to talk publicly about what happened that dark and deadly night.

But despite the grim and tragic history of this magnificent square, I have to say it is still an amazing place to visit and one of the main attractions of the entire city. It is both beautiful, spacious and I believe after it gets dark is haunted by the both the fog and the students who gave their lives so that their voices might be heard.
