I am a big fan of horror movies, but not gore. Most movies with tons of gore seem to use it as a substitute for plot or character development. When I find a movie that is genuinely creepy without resorting to gore or cheap scares, I take notice.

Dorothy Mills is just such a movie. The basic premise of the movie is that a psychologist goes to the small island of Donegal to examine a 15 year old girl accused of molesting and abusing a baby that she was babysitting and see if she is fit to stand trial.

The psychologist brings along her own emotional baggage, as she is still suffering from the death of her young son. She quickly becomes curious about the odd behavior of the people on the island, especially after her car is run off the road by two cars which she is told do not exist.

Speaking with the titular character, the psychologist quickly learns that there is more to Dorothy than meets the eye. Her ensuing battle to help Dorothy is confounded on all sides by the people on the island, including the town priest and Dorothy’s aunt, who is ...

      • also her guardian. The psychologist is forced to confront many on the islands and is forced to confront her own unresolved grief over the death of her son (in a very heart wrenching scene).

I think this movie has a generally creepy and sinister feel to it, and the gore is kept to a minimum. I loved the performances by Jenn Murray, who played Dorothy and Carice Van Houten, who played the psychologist. I feel that Jenn Murray’s performance was even more outstanding considering this was her first film role. Not wanting to spoil the plot twists, I will

just say that there was a lot asked of her for this role, and she delivers. Her performance was light years beyond any of the young horror movie actresses that have trotted across the screen in the past few years.

I recommend this movie to anyone who likes a creepy movie that keeps you guessing. This is a European movie, so I will say that anyone expecting an ending that is all sunshine and roses may need to look elsewhere. However, if you are willing to stick with it, you will be rewarded with a smartly written and very well acted film.
