I really liked this book, although it is bittersweet. It is a memoir written by Martha Beck, a woman who was raised in the Mormon faith (also known as the Church of the Latter Day Saints, hence the title of the book).

The book describes how, for years, she had questioned her faith, and ultimately rejected it (she felt it was based on lies).

      Complicating her spiritual

decision-making was the fact that her father was considered to be the intellectual bulwark of the Mormon faith.

An even worse complication was the fact that she began having recovered memories of her sexual abuse at his hands as a child.

I loved the fact that Beck became stronger over time.

This, in spite of the fact that she was living in Provo, Utah.

      Almost everyone there ...

      • warned her not to say anything bad about the church, and especially not to despoil her father’s reputation.

Reading the book, I became concerned that she would end up alone, and my fears were realized.

Her family eventually shunned her, including every one of her many siblings.

They informed everyone that their big-mouthed sister was mentally ill.

I felt so sad near the end of the book,

when she and her husband, who had also left the church, concluded that they had to move to a community where less Mormons lived.

Beck truly felt that she could not lead a “false” life.

I feel that, deep down, none of us can afford to do that.

In her case, she had to give up her past; but she ultimately gained a future that would be all her own.
