  • The sound reproduction is pretty amazing – I’ve tried out dozens of headphones and the PX100 were genuinely the best below around US$50
  • This is no problem if you are on the move and need to keep your wits about you (in traffic, etc)
  • Apart from all the good audio stuff and quality build, the best feature for me is the storage case, which is quite tough and provides significant protection for the folded headphones from dings and dust

The Sennheiser PX100 set of headphones are more than just the gadgetry that allows them to fold up and pack into their sunglasses-sized hard-case.

I’ve tried many in-ear ear buds, but I’ve never been satisfied. Either my ears get sore, or either my ears or the buds get gunged up with foul crud. On the positive side, in-ear buds are indestructible, go-anywhere items. Headphones by comparison are easily damaged on-the-go and don’t generally last long.

Sennheiser to the rescue! I picked up a pair of PX100’s at Virgin Megastore. The sound reproduction is pretty

amazing – I’ve tried out dozens of headphones and the PX100 were genuinely the best below around US$50. Extremely comfortable: there is a decent amount of freedom for each speaker in the vertical and horizontal planes and the headband is well padded. It has all-metal hinges (for folding up) and what looks like an all-metal band all the way around the head. This probably means they will last a fairly long time.

The headphones have open backs and fully cover the ear, but they are not full cans. They do not fully cut out ...

      • the sound from ambient surroundings. This is no problem if you are on the move and need to keep your wits about you (in traffic, etc).

Sennheiser did their homework on the foam used on the speakers. Normally you find that the foam disintegrates into powder over time as you wear headphones extensively. These have lasted more than 2 years now!

Apart from all the good audio stuff and quality build, the best feature for me is the storage case, which is quite tough and provides significant protection for the folded headphones from dings and

dust. Toss it with confidence into a backpack or travel case. The case is a bit quirky to open and handle due to a back-to-front hinge.

The PX100s are extremely good bang-for-the-buck for headphones and they look like they mean business. These are not likely to replace proper studio cans any time soon (for that, try Sennheiser HD800). However the PX100’s are lightweight, travel well if you rough it and the sound reproduction is brilliant. They go well with the dynamic range that an iPod can produce. Top of the game and worth a 10.
