Sequels are often just the worst things under the sun, often taking the original characters to ruin. There are few that really are true to the story, that follow it through and make it all believable. Sometimes you still enjoy the original better, but even so, you laugh and enjoy and when the end credits roll, you’ve had a great time and you really feel like

you’ve just revisited some old friends. That’s the case with The Odd Couple II.

By the time this 1998 sequel was done, the characters of neat-a-holic Felix Unger and mess-a-holic Oscar Madison were well known to both the TV and theatrical worlds. Not only was there the original movie done decades earlier, but there had been the hit TV series. There had been an attempted up-do ...

      • of the TV series with an all-black cast as well as a Broadway revamp. What were the odds that this follow up could entertain?

The odds were against them, but with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau returning as Unger and Madison, the movie worked. From the opening gambit where Felix once again shows up on Oscar’s doorstep to the kicker of the last scene, it’s pure Odd

Couple insanity. The characters are older, but they are still true to themselves. These two are best friends who drive each other crazy, and that equates to a lot of laughs. While there are a few moments that I didn’t care for as much, overall, I was pleased.

If you’re looking for a fun film night, The Odd Couple II is worth being part of the viewing menu.
