Alias Smith and Jones: Stagecoach Seven is one of my favorite episodes for this hit ABC western series. One of the reasons for that is that Randolph Mantooth (Johnny Gage on Emergency!) guest stars as Dan Loomis. Actually, the cast is really very good in this show where the stagecoach that Heyes and Curry (Pete Duel and Ben Murphy) are traveling on gets robbed.

The robbery isn’t the rub, it’s that eventually one of the outlaws realizes that Heyes and Curry were among the passengers. The bandits then surround the stage stop and order the stage master and the others to turn over the infamous outlaws.

Most of the action from that point on occurs inside the stage stop, and it’s all good. The masterful Keenan Wynn plays ...

      • Charlie Utley. He’s funny as can be as he tries to control the situation. Then there’s Sallie Shockley as Loomis’ bride. Another favorite is Mitzi Hoag (Miss Essie on Here Come the Brides) who is superb here. She’s the somewhat-silenced, dutiful wife of Benjamin T. Bowers, who is a loudmouth, a man full of a lot of hot air. Watching this
relationship progress is awesome. Dana Elcar, so talented and who appeared in numerous television shows and theatrical films, plays the blustery Bowers.

Then there are some of the bad guys, including nice performances by L.Q. Jones and Geoffrey Lewis.

The whole show is fun. It’s watching strangers coming together and loving our heroes as much as we do. I never tire of watching this show.
