Alias Smith and Jones: Exit from Wickenburg is a fun entry for the second regular episode of this western starring Pete Duel and Ben Murphy as outlaws Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry. In this show, they become saloon managers after catching cheats in a card game. Susan Strasberg guest stars as Mary Cunningham, the widowed saloon owner with two children. She has the right

sensitivity to pull off this role.

For me, one of the best aspects of this episode are the other two main guest stars, Pernell Roberts and Mark Lenard. Roberts is always trying to get the outlaws out of town, while telling them how sorry he is and how much he really does like them. It’s just a hoot.

Lenard plays Mark Sloane who owns most of the ...

      • town. I always like seeing Lenard. He was wonderful on Here Come the Brides, and I met him once at a Star Trek convention (he played Sarek, Spock’s father). He was very nice, so it’s pleasant to see him pop up on the screen.

This episode has a wonderful mix of humor and drama, and that’s the case for most of the first season .

When Duel and Murphy are left to bounce off of each other, the result is magic. Duel in particular has a superb comedic timing. He had been in a comedy series before this show. It was a nice show called Love on a Rooftop in which Judy Carne played his wife. His ability to pull off the right inflection at the right moment is awesome.
